        What

        Typically used to apply an anti-freezing fluid to the atmospheric side

        of seals in services or atmospheric conditions below ( 32F).

        Why

        Ice formation on the atmospheric side of seals can cause seal

        damage during startup .The anti-freezing fluid displaces water that

        may have collected about the seal .

        Where

        Used primarily with singles seals in vertical pumps

        May be used in cold climate offshore applications

        May be used in chilled or cryogenic services

        Reservoir is normally only open to the seal during equipment

        commissioning and startups

        Preventative Maintenance

        Check level prior to startup .The isolation valve should be opened

        prior to startup in order to flush out any collected water on the

        atmospheric side of the seal .Flow from the reservoir should be

        visually confirmed at the seal drive collar ,at the seal drain ,or by

        monitoring the level gauge .Close isolation valve after the startup

        sequence is completed to preserve anti-freezing fluid for future use .

        If water or ice is observed collecting at the seal ,a flush from the

        Plan 51 reservoir can be performed .
